Fun Home: The Musical at ShenanArts
“Fun Home,” the 2015 Tony Award winner for Best Musical based on Alison Bechdel’s hit graphic memoir, makes its Shenandoah Valley debut Oct. 11-13 and 18-20 at ShenanArts in Staunton! “Fun Home” is a groundbreaking musical based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir. The story introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family—her mother, brothers, and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father—in surprising new ways. This refreshingly honest musical explores themes of family, identity, and coming of age, offering a poignant look at seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. One of the most innovative productions ever to hit Broadway, “Fun Home” won five 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It features a compelling score by Jeanine Tesori, a heartfelt book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, and direction by Sam Gold, all of whom earned Tony Awards for their work. With a score that ranges from exuberant 70s pop to aching melodies and dissonant harmonies, “Fun Home” is the story of a daughter and father, of coming out, and of coming to terms with a life shaped by family secrets. Directed by Rebekah Bradley Ray.
