Open House
The Sponsored Residential Program at Valley Community Services Board is having an Open House on Tuesday, February 11 from 3 – 6 p.m. at the VCSB office, 85 Sangers Lane. Learn about this rewarding way to open your home, your heart and your family to an individual with developmental disabilities. VCSB provides all the training and once you have a placement in your home, we provide 24 hour a day, on call support services. This is a great opportunity to meet some of our current sponsors and individuals, and the Sponsored Residential team. If you have questions or for more information, call 540-213-7398. The Sponsor provides a safe, family style home environment to the Individual while providing daily assistance based on their individual plan for supports. This includes personal care, community participation, social skills, budgeting, maintain health and safety standards and other pertinent supports necessary to foster independence and the highest quality of life possible. VCSB staff support Sponsor families throughout the individual’s stay.
Staunton Underground Comic and Zine Fest
Saturday, January 18th from 11 to 5 head on down to the Gypsy Hill Gym for the Staunton Underground Comic and Zine Fest. 50+ independent comics and zine creators from Virginia, DC, Maryland, North Carolina, and beyond, will once again converge on Staunton for the only event of its kind in the Shenandoah Valley. Kickoff Party for the Staunton Underground Comic and Zine Fest
On Friday, January 17th, Ciders from Mars will host a kickoff party for the Staunton Underground Comic and Zine Fest. Join them for original comics, animation and a conversation with cartoonist Dash Shaw and Thomas Campbell (“The Comics Blogger”). Special musical performances by Bantam Draper and Sensor Ghost.
Fine Arts Drawing Class
Fridays from January 17th through February 7th from 2PM to 3:30, the Art Hive is hosting a Fine Arts Drawing Class. In these sessions, students will explore the foundational skills of drawing, focusing on the building blocks that bring visual art to life. The class will cover essential techniques such as the use of line, form, light, and shading. Students will engage in a variety of drawing exercises, including still life, figure drawing, and self-portrait work. They will also experiment with different drawing styles, from realistic depictions to more abstract approaches, broadening their artistic expression. By the end of the session, students will have a strong grasp of fundamental drawing techniques and an appreciation for various styles of artistic expression. Saturday Night Improv!
Join us for our first improv show of 2025! Anything could happen and a $10 cover gets you an all-access pass to the madness where *you* decide who the winner is. Doors and drinks at 6:30, show starts at 7:30! What style of improv will you see? It’s called Gorilla Theatre: a dynamic improv form where participants engage in unscripted scenes with minimal setup, relying on instinct and bold choices to drive the action forward. You, the audience, get to vote whether the scene was successful by awarding them a banana, or by punishing them with a forfeit. Only one improviser will be awarded the winner of our show
Treasure Island
Presented by Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School Jennifer Hawkins revels in her father’s stories of life at sea and dreams of having her own adventures. When she comes into possession of a mysterious map, she eagerly sets off on the Hispanola in search of long-lost treasure. But can she trust her new friend Long John Silver and his enigmatic crew, or will she find herself wrapped up in a game of piracy? Don’t miss the Virginia state premiere of this this fresh and feminist take on the classic novel.
Bad Movie Night at Redbeard Brewing
Get ready for Bad Movie Night hosted by Redbeard Brewing. Wednesday, January 15th from 7pm-10pm. The movie will be a surprise and curated by their very own Spencer Ware!!
