WQSV Profile:
Bayou Bob
How did you come to be involved with WQSV? And how long have you been involved?
Steve the Painter got me involved with the station around 2 years ago.
When did you start DJing? Are there any DJs who influenced you? Or something/someone else who influenced you?
I have always loved music, live music and obscure bands. I grew up listening to WTUL in New Orleans. My cousin gave me a terabyte of music a decade ago, so I have a good source of mp3s. I love to add new music to my collection and share it with friends. This is my first DJ gig, but I have always wanted to be one.
Talk about your connection to music/the role music plays in your life?
Music has been a constant in my life, I am so fortunate to have grown up in NOLA, have seen more bands in concert than I can remember. I am always listening to music during the day.
Describe your show.
My show is called the B-side harking back to my love of non-hits. I play all kinds of music and if you wait 5 minutes the music will be totally different. Rolling Stones to Kraftwerk with Return to Forever in-between.
Who are some of your favorite musicians and why?
I like 70s and 80’s music and some new music. I grew up in New Orleans with Hugo and we saw almost every alternative band that came to town in the early 80’s.
What is your first memory involving music?
I had an 8 track of The Jungle Book that I listened to on repeat, when my sister brought home Magical Mystery Tour, I discovered rock.
What was the first concert you attended?
My first concert was in 1978. The Rolling Stones, Doobie Brothers, Van Halen and the Neville Brothers. I saw Nirvana in a bar in Seattle.
How do you go about building your show?
I build my show by looking at my files and picking songs almost randomly. Sometimes I have a theme like Black Friday or Halloween.
Do you have any particular criteria when selecting music for your show?
No, just try to avoid songs with profanity, it can be challenging!
